What to Say When the Conversation Goes Quiet
By Catherine Gomez
A quiet minute on a date is not a failed date. It is a pause. Most people treat that pause like an emergency and fill it with a story they do not even care about. You can do something kinder. You can let the quiet sit for a breath, then offer one real question.
Start with the room you are actually in
If you are in a cafe, talk about the cafe. Ask what they order when they are not trying to impress anyone. Small and true beats clever and rehearsed. The goal is not to sound interesting. The goal is to find out whether you enjoy the same ordinary things.
Trade one specific instead of five generalities
I like music is not a conversation. I have been playing the same album in the kitchen all month is a conversation, because the other person can answer with their own kitchen. Specifics give people a handle. Generalities give them homework.
Notice who is doing the work
If you have asked four questions and they have asked none, that is information. One shy stretch is normal. A whole evening of you carrying both sides is a pattern. You are allowed to stop performing and see what they do with the space.
Repair a clumsy sentence out loud
You will say something awkward. Everyone does. A short repair is more attractive than a perfect script. I said that in a messy way. What I meant is I like plans that have an end time. People trust a person who can correct themselves without a big apology.
Keep private details private for now
A good talk is not a reason to share your address, your workplace, or a photo you cannot get back. Stay in a public place. Tell a friend the plan. Leave on your own. Warmth and caution belong in the same night.
End while it still feels easy
The best time to say goodnight is when you still want ten more minutes, not when you are hunting for the door. Say you had a good time, say whether you want to meet again, and then actually leave. Clarity is a compliment.
When friends ask me for wording, I send them to the short notes on Of Like Minds. Read them once, then use your own voice. A borrowed sentence only works if you mean it.
Quiet is not the enemy. A person who can share a pause, then say one true thing, is worth a second coffee.
