Nantucket storm reveals a possible 1884 shipwreck

A nor’easter exposed wooden timbers on Nantucket’s south shore, renewing interest in the schooner Warren Sawyer, which ran aground there in 1884. The identification is still tentative: the newly visible wood resembles part of a hull, but researchers say it needs more study.

The story is a reminder that coastal storms can uncover pieces of local history while shifting sand and surf can cover them again. Earlier remains near the same beach were assessed as most likely from the Warren Sawyer, though this new find has not been confirmed.
