Maine’s new archives portal puts public records within easier reach
Public records are most useful when people can actually find them. Maine’s new Open Access portal offers a searchable starting point for more than 100,000 imaged government and historical records, from statehood-era material to recent public documents.
The launch is a practical change for genealogists, students, journalists and residents who want to follow how state decisions were made. Search and browse tools make it possible to begin from home rather than first arranging a research visit in Augusta. The collection spans government, courts, land and natural resources, elections, military records and social history.
There is an important limit: this is a new front door, not a complete online copy of the archives. Maine’s State Archives holds miles of records, and more material still needs to be described, preserved and digitized. The project’s value will grow as those holdings become easier to discover.
