Planning space in a Snake and 2048 puzzle

A merge puzzle asks you to look beyond the next pickup. A move may increase the number on a tile, but it also changes how much room the snake has to turn. The useful question is not just “Can I collect this?” but “Where will the tail be after I do?”

One way to plan is to leave a route out of crowded corners before chasing a high-value tile. When matching numbers reach the tail, they merge and shorten the snake, so a well-timed merge can restore space. That makes the order of pickups as important as their immediate score.

Mergecoil is a free browser puzzle that combines these ideas. Try a few turns slowly, then compare a route that preserves an exit with one that fills the board quickly. The contrast makes the trade-off between a tempting pickup and future maneuvering easier to see.
