Vivaldi users had plenty of questions after the browser’s latest update started warning people that Manifest V2 extensions, including the popular uBlock Origin, were no longer supported. Now, the company has stepped in to clear up some of the confusion.
In a pinned Reddit comment, a Vivaldi team member explained that the warning is only meant as a heads-up. If your MV2 extension has been disabled, you can still turn it back on by opening vivaldi:extensions. According to Vivaldi, those extensions should continue working for the rest of the Vivaldi 8.1 release cycle, which is expected to last around two months.
That gives users a bit more breathing room before they have to move on.
“We’d like to support your favourite extensions, this does not seem viable in the long run,” the company wrote. It also noted that Vivaldi has managed to keep Manifest V2 support alive for more than a year longer than originally expected, but believes Google is finally “pulling the plug for good this time.”
This isn’t exactly a surprise. As we reported last month, Chrome 150 and Chrome 151 effectively put Manifest V2 extensions on life support, with support gradually disappearing across Google’s browser ecosystem.
Google has also confirmed that Manifest V2 extensions will disappear from the Chrome Web Store after August 31, making it even harder for users to keep relying on them.
For uBlock Origin users, Vivaldi’s message is similar to what the extension’s own developers have been saying. There’s still a temporary workaround available in Chrome 150, but even the uBlock Origin team recommends switching to uBlock Origin Lite because the workaround won’t last forever.
Vivaldi also addressed concerns about ad blocking. The company said its built-in Tracker and Ad Blocker will continue working even after Manifest V2 disappears. It admitted that some users have pointed out shortcomings in the feature, adding that improving the built-in blocker has become a higher priority and that new updates are on the way.
The clarification comes just days after Vivaldi 8.1 rolled out with a handful of bug fixes and improvements, which you can read about in our previous coverage.
